Learners at LVS Hassocks are increasing the amount of time they spend in lessons, listening more and learning to care for and respect others through an innovative new scheme the school has introduced which Assistant Head Rachel Smith says has “increased learning, improved time spent in class and motivated learners to engage with and enjoy lessons.”
The Cabinet of Dreams, full of rewards worth differing amounts of points, provides a visual incentive for learners to focus them on lessons and behaviour with reward points available in each lesson for learning, attitude to learning, and bonus points available for respect and sharing with others.
The scheme has already had a really positive effect, with Toby having already benefited by earning himself a £10 Amazon gift card having accumulated over 500 points over five weeks. He said: “The Cabinet of Dreams is really good – it encourages learners to try in lessons to earn points. I stayed in all of my lessons, listened to the teachers and completed my work, and wanting to earn points for the gift card encouraged me to do that”.
Amongst the other rewards on offer are DVDs, lego, modelling clay and figurines, but Samuel also redeemed his points recently for an Amazon gift card. He said: “The Cabinet of Dreams has made a difference, it makes us want to work harder.”
An assembly with learners explained how the scheme would work, and they were able to have input themselves regarding the type of rewards they would like to see on offer to ensure they were working towards relevant prizes that they wanted.
Rachel Smith said: “The Cabinet of Dreams is a really visual prompt and reminder to learners that working hard and being kind to others is something that will be rewarded. It is hard to convey to learners that working hard now will be of benefit to them in years to come when they sit exams, so giving them regular rewards along the way helps them to stay focused and realise that they will benefit from working hard.”
