WH Smith - Worthing

A favourite retailer on any high street, WH Smith is best known for selling books, magazines, stationery and other goods. The Worthing store has been working with LVS Hassocks for the past two years, offering work experience to a number of students.

“It’s nice to help the kids,” says the Worthing Store Leader, Chelle Dale, who has also been giving students the chance to take part in mock job interviews, which helps the pupils develop interview skills, gain confidence in answering questions and receive feedback in a safe and supportive environment.

“We are very pleased with our relationship with LVS Hassocks and are happy to continue to welcome students here for work experience,”

“It’s about giving them an understanding of the working world. It also helps us out – we’re often short-staffed – so having helpers along can really assist us in getting extra jobs done,” says Chelle.

Students have got involved with stock-labelling, stock audits and even working with Chelle on the replanning of the book section on the shop floor. Shop floor work has given them the chance to interact with shoppers too – even getting the opportunity to talk to and help customers.

Chelle adds that LVS Hassocks’ student always behave extremely well and are fully engaged in any task – which she adds, isn’t always the case with children from mainstream schools, who can be less than well-behaved!

“We are very pleased with our relationship with LVS Hassocks and are happy to continue to welcome students here for work experience,” says Chelle.
