Liam Pope and Charlie Ries Coward from LVS Hassocks had the experience of a life-time, when they carried the Olympic Torch on stage, at the ALMR Christmas Lunch in London on Thursday. This momentous occasion was made even more amazing when £20,000 was raised for the school, thanks to the guests at the luncheon - all members of the drinks traded industry.
The school is managed and run by the Licensed Trade Charity, and its aim is to develop the students’ skills and opportunities for employment. This substantial amount of money will be used to support the new NVQ’s in food preparation and cooking being taught at the school. From teaching staff, to support for work experience and equipment, this programme will help the young people at the school have a brighter future as currently over 85% of adults with autism are not in full time paid employment.
Jackie Doe, who accompanied the students on the day said: "Im really proud that both Liam and Charlie were able to get up on the stage in front of that many people, and hold the Olympic Torch. Charlie remarked how much of an honour it was to be able to do so. Liam was buzzing after we came off stage and wanted to spend more time mingling with the party guests to tell them all about his achievements.
"The ALMR team made them both feel so welcome and important, I'm so thrilled with the amount of money raised, it means we will be able to pay for all of the NVQ Catering costs for the near future and buy some new equipment for the catering students."
