Hearing Ben Raven and William Parris talk so enthusiastically about the motor vehicle sessions at Plumpton College you would think they had been working in a garage for years. But in fact they are just few weeks into the course, so the knowledge and skills they have attained so far is amazing. Ben ran through how he carried out a basic MOT check, from checking the oil and pipes, to testing the brakes and wipers. William enthused about how he had changed wheels and used a lift, he even mentioned the importance of health and safety in a workshop.
It’s working in partnership with organisations like Plumpton, that can really make a difference to the lives of the young people at Hassocks. Ben, 15, said: “I was so nervous on my first day, but I really enjoy it, I’m going to get a qualification and the other people in my group are really nice.” William said: “I am already thinking about going on to the next level.”
Jackie Doe, Assistant Head Teacher said: “The course prepares students for a variety of different vocational course options, it exposes them to some experiences they would otherwise not engage in due to their disabilities. It also provides and excellent preparation for their transition on from us. Mainstream colleges are scary places for the Autistic teenager, and with the ability to give them supported and successful experiences while they are with us we can improve success rates for when they leave."
